Jackson Unity Festival Launches

The Michigan Theatre, Jackson Downtown Development Authority and the Jackson Symphony Orchestra announce the launch of the first Jackson Unity Festival, July 11-15, 2018 in Downtown Jackson.  This five day music, arts and culture festival will be held at multiple venues throughout Downtown Jackson including The Michigan Theatre of Jackson, Bucky Harris Park, Weatherwax Hall and Horace Blackman Park.

The Jackson Unity Festival is a sister festival to the long-running Concert of Colors in Detroit.  The Concert of Colors is metro Detroit’s free annual diversity-themed music festival. It is produced by the Arab American National Museum with partners Detroit Symphony OrchestraDetroit Institute of ArtsCharles H. Wright Museum of African American HistoryACCESS and University of Michigan – Detroit Center. The goal of this five-day festival is uniting metro Detroit’s diverse communities and ethnic groups by presenting musical acts from around the world. Over its 25-year history, the festival has become a beloved highlight of metro Detroit’s summer festival season, and one of the few free-admission music festivals remaining locally.

The Concert of Colors was established by Ismael Ahmed – the former head of the human services organization ACCESS – and New Detroit in 1993 as a one-day event at Chene Park on Detroit’s riverfront. The inaugural event drew a modest crowd to Chene Park, but by 1999, some 10,000 music lovers were coming out each year. The festival expanded to three days in 2001, when it was part of the official festivities for Detroit’s 300th birthday, drawing an audience of 100,000.

To further the goal of uniting the diverse culture of the Greater Jackson Community, the Concert of Colors is branching out to Jackson, partnering in the sister festival:  Jackson Unity Festival.  Several acts and presentations will share both the stages of Metro Detroit and Downtown Jackson.

Jackson Unity Festival organizers have established an all-star lineup of diverse and popular music acts and will be adding presentations, displays and activities over the next several weeks.

All are invited to join us in Downtown Jackson, July 11-15 for the first ever Jackson Unity Festival!
